What we do
“ It has been really good working with you. Our project could not have been given a better boost than to have really well designed and accessible information. Many thanks to you and the team of people at Working with Words. ”
London Sports Forum
- Working with Words makes information easy for people with learning difficulties and people with low literacy.
- We also train people with learning difficulties in work and life skills.
More information
Making information accessible
- Do you have information that you would like to reach a wider audience?
- Would you like people with learning difficulties to know more about what you do?
- Would you like your information in easy read, with pictures, or as an mp3, CD, or web site?
Making the text accessible
Customers may have a booklet, leaflet or another document that they want to reach more people - particularly people with learning difficulties.
Our job is to make this document easier by:
- Editing out the parts of a document that are to hard to understand or which make it too long.
- Replacing jargon like facilitate, consult, or relationship with words like help, ask, or friend.
- Our service users with learning difficulties suggest the best ways of explaining the things in the document.
- We then enlarge the text size and add headings and use colour.
Images
We will then add images to help make the meaning clearer. We might add a phone next to the telephone number or use a photograph of a particular person - like the head of a service or an advocate, for example. It all depends on what each piece of work needs. We often take our own pictures for this. - We can provide the document as a ready to print Adobe InDesign or QuarkXPress document or a PDF for high resolution printing or an optimised file for email or the Internet.
Audio CD and MP3
Often we will use the easy text to make an audio CD or mp3 file using clear voices, music and sound effects. These can be used with the booklet/leaflet or on their own. The audio can also be used to make a web site more accessible to people who find reading difficult.
Accessible web sites
Working with Words also design accessible web sites. We go through the same process to make the text more accessible, enlarge the text and add images, and we can also add audio or your video to the site as mp3s or Flash Video.
